The Belarusian Women's Basketball Championship stands as the premier domestic contest for female athletes in Belarus. Officially titled the Vysshaya Liga, the tournament operates under the banner of the BETERA Championship for the current campaign. It serves as the apex of the national pyramid, sitting directly above any second-tier structures. The competition traces its lineage to 1992, when the Belarusian Basketball Federation established it as the successor to the Soviet-era championship. The inaugural season took place immediately following that foundation.
The field comprises eight clubs, a number that has stabilised in recent years. Participants include Horizont Minsk, Olimpia Grodno, BDU-Tsmoki Minsk, and Gomel. The calendar follows a standard progression: a regular season determines the standings, leading into a playoff phase. Historically, this phase has utilised group stages before narrowing to quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. Current playoff structures often employ best-of-three series for the championship decider and best-of-two matches for earlier rounds.
Horizont Minsk holds the record for success, having claimed fifteen titles. Olimpia Grodno follows with nine, while BDU-Tsmoki Minsk has won six. In the most recent completed cycle, Olimpia Grodno secured the crown for the 2025/2026 season. The league shares its official top-tier designation with the men's competition, differing only in the gender of the participants. Both fall under the same organisational umbrella managed by the federation.
While a First League exists below this level, the specific mechanisms for promotion and relegation remain undocumented in public records. The competition’s history features periods of distinct dominance, such as BDU-Tsmoki Minsk’s run between 2014 and 2020. Olimpia Grodno also established a notable streak of five consecutive titles from 2003 to 2007. The tournament continues to operate under its current sponsorship agreement.
