The result came just two days after the sides met for the first time this season, when the hosts edged a tighter contest 84-73. By then, the pattern was already becoming clear. Puente Alto have now won both meetings this season and are building a comfortable gap at the top of the table.
The visitors struggled to find rhythm from the opening possessions. Espanyol de Talca committed 25 turnovers throughout the match, many of them careless passes or rushed decisions under pressure. Puente Alto took advantage with 15 steals of their own, turning defensive activity into transition opportunities. To be fair, the away side also struggled to convert their own chances, shooting just 28 from 61 in the field.
Three-point shooting proved decisive. Puente Alto connected on 13 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc, while Espanyol managed only 9 from 23. The home team's ball movement was noticeably sharper, recording 26 assists compared to 17 for the visitors. And here's the thing about these matchups — when one side starts hitting from distance, the other tends to collapse defensively, leaving open lanes for drives and kick-outs.
Statistically, the gap was wider than the scoreline suggests. Puente Alto shot 56 per cent from the field and 73 per cent from the free-throw line, while Espanyol de Talca managed 46 per cent and 74 per cent respectively. The home side also limited their own mistakes, committing just 11 turnovers against 25 for the visitors. Rebounds told a different story, with Espanyol grabbing 34 to 28, but they rarely converted extra possessions into points.
The result leaves Puente Alto in second place with nine wins from 12 games, while Espanyol de Talca remain in seventh with just a single victory. The visitors have now lost 11 of 12 matches this season and face an uphill battle to avoid the bottom of the table. Puente Alto, meanwhile, can still hold the tie in their own hands if they maintain this level of efficiency.
