Sebastián Carrasco was named Most Valuable Player of the Liga Nacional de Básquetbol in 2025, the same year Universidad de Concepción beat Colegio Los Leones in the final to collect a fourth straight league title.

The basketball section traces back to 1979, the year Chile's top flight, the División Mayor del Básquetbol (Dimayor), was first played, though the sports corporation that now runs the club was not formally set up until August 1994. Four Dimayor titles followed between 1995 and 2012, then the club found a second wind entirely in the Liga Nacional, winning it in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025 and adding matching Copa Chile and Supercopa runs along the way.

Not every name from those years stayed on the court. Patricio Briones, one of the club's historical players, went on to sit in parliament. On court, Carlos Lauler and Diego Silva carried the modern squad alongside Carrasco, though none of them has gone on to the NBA; Concepción's players who move on tend to land in Europe or elsewhere in South America.

Across the city, Arturo Fernández Vial supplies the rivalry that matters most, the Clásico Penquista, or Clásico del Biobío. Home games are played at the Casa del Deporte, a gymnasium of 2,000 seats on the university's own campus, where supporters know the team as El Campanil, after the bell tower that gives Concepción's students their landmark.
