The Gimnasio Monumental María Gallardo sits in the Pilauco district of Osorno, and locals simply call it "El Gigante de Pilauco". For smaller occasions Español falls back on its own Gimnasio Español.

Español de Osorno grew out of the city's Spanish immigrant community, formally established in August 1931 under its first president, José Olivares. Within a year it had helped set up the Osorno Basketball Association, and by the mid-1930s it was already collecting the association's Second Series title five years running — the start of a habit of dominance in local competition that carried through the 1940s and into a run of five straight Liga Osorno championships in the early 1950s.

The club then spent decades away from the professional stage before returning to it in 2022, winning the Liga DOS and Liga Saesa in the same year and forcing its way back into national basketball. Jorge Luis Álvarez took charge for the run that followed, guiding the Red Devils to the Supercopa de Chile in 2024 and to a Liga Nacional final the same year. That period also carried Español into continental competition for the first time, in the Liga Sudamericana de Clubes, where the side beat Ecuador's Santa María before finishing fourth in its group.

None of it carries the weight of the Súper Clásico against Club Deportivo Valdivia.
