The run to the 2019 semi-finals of the Liga de las Américas still stands apart from everything else on the club's record: no Chilean side had reached that stage in the tournament's modern format before Las Ánimas did it, and the road there ran through a 108–106 double-overtime win over the Brazilian side Mogi das Cruzes in the quarter-finals. That campaign followed directly from the club's first national title, taken in 2017–18 when Las Ánimas beat Colegio Los Leones 4–1 in the finals under coach Jorge Luis Álvarez.

Las Ánimas grew out of the Las Ánimas neighbourhood of Valdivia, in southern Chile, and has carried the district's name since it was founded in 1942. It spent years in regional competition, playing in the Libsur league from 2001 before the step up to the top-flight Liga Nacional de Básquetbol for the 2011–12 season.

Home games are played in front of crowds well above the official listing for the Coliseo Municipal Antonio Azurmendy Riveros, which is registered for 3,700 but regularly fills to 5,000 or more. The players wear black, with white and touches of red, and are known locally as Los Fantasmas.

Brandon Robinson carried much of the scoring load through both landmark seasons, leading the way in the 2018 final and again in the Liga de las Américas run of 2019.
