Basketball at Español de Talca grew out of a general sports club that had been established in the city in 1921. That came in 1979, when Talca's team joined as a founding member of the División Mayor del Básquetbol Chileno, and two years later it already had a national title, winning the Dimayor championship in 1981.

The club carries three nicknames rooted in that Spanish heritage. Its colours, red and yellow, reflect that origin. Home games are played at a gymnasium named after Manuel Herrera Blanco, one of the players who built the club's early identity on court alongside the Bravo brothers, Samuel and Francisco, known as "Tachuela."

The modern era brought a run few Chilean clubs could match: three Liga Nacional de Básquetbol titles in 2010, 2012–13 and 2016–17, the last of them delivered under coach Gabriel Schamberger. Between those championships came a sharper test. Relegated to the Second Division in 2019, the club won that competition outright the following season and returned to the top flight at the first attempt, in 2019–20.

None of that history has settled the Clásico Talquino. Rangers de Talca remains the rival that defines the city's basketball calendar, alongside Municipal Talca, and a repeat of the 2016–17 title has so far stayed out of reach.
