«Albirrojos»
Juan Manuel Córdoba came back to the bench in 2015 and picked up almost everywhere he had left off: and in the 2015-16 final against Universidad de Concepción, won 4-2, it was Erik Carrasco who took the finals MVP. That run set the tone for what followed — another title in 2017, then again in 2018-19.
The club itself carries a longer, patched-together story than either title run suggests. What plays today as Club Deportivo Valdivia was pieced together in 1986 out of three local sides, Phoenix, Salesiano and Deportivo UACh, brought under one badge so Valdivia would keep a place in the national league. Under Marcos Guzmán the rebuilt side won its first title in the 1995 Apertura and went on to take the national championship in 2001-02, beating Provincial Llanquihue 4-3.
Locally the "Albirrojos" nickname, white and red, sits alongside two older ones that say more about standing than colour: "El Gigante del Sur" and "El Decano". Games against Club de Deportes Las Ánimas, in black and red, are still billed as the Derbi de Valdivia, or the Clásico del Calle-Calle, named for the river that runs through the city.
Home games are played in front of 5,000 at the Coliseo Municipal Antonio Azurmendy Riveros.
