Cade Cunningham rebuilds off-season training around core work
After a rib fracture nearly cost him award eligibility, the Pistons guard now focuses on planks and altitude training in Colorado with teammate Ron Holland.
Cade Cunningham has rebuilt his off-season work around core strength after a rib fracture last spring that nearly cost him eligibility for individual awards.
He missed 11 games over three weeks, then came back for the last three and finished on 64 appearances. That was enough for the NBA's "exceptional circumstances" rule to keep him in the running for awards.
Cunningham said the episode changed how he thinks about his body and how he prepares it. The work is now built around planks in many forms, among them "stir the pot", an advanced version with the forearms on a gym ball.
He also made altitude training a priority. The thinner air makes the lungs and heart work harder. Pistons forward Ron Holland joined him in Colorado this summer, and the two hiked and ran the stadium at a nearby school. According to Cunningham, Holland had never been in the mountains before.
