Tim Connelly Warns NBA on Betting's Influence on Fans
Timberwolves president Tim Connelly says the NBA must ensure young fans engage with basketball for the sport itself, not just for betting purposes.
Tim Connelly, president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves, said the league needs to watch how betting shapes the way younger fans engage with the sport.
"We need to make sure we're not raising a generation that's only interested in sport for the sake of betting. The NBA understands a number of the problems it faces. I don't bet myself, but I understand where the appeal might lie. I hope the sport itself, and the joy it brings people, doesn't suffer because of people who are interested in it for the wrong reasons," Connelly said at a press conference.
His remarks came as he addressed the league's close ties with bookmakers, a subject the NBA has faced growing scrutiny over in recent years.
