About the player
Sarah Puntigam holds the record for the most appearances in the history of the Austrian women's national team, having overtaken Nina Burger in September 2021. She reached her 100th cap in 2020 and had passed 150 by 2024, and has captained the side for most of her senior career. In 2016 she won the Cyprus Women's Cup with Austria.
She came through DFC LUV Graz and Gnas before moving to Germany, where she made her professional debut with Bayern Munich II and went on to play for the club's senior side, winning the DFB-Pokal Frauen in 2011–12. A spell at SC Kriens in Switzerland followed, where she scored in the Swiss Cup final, before four seasons at SC Freiburg. In 2018 she became the first Austrian player to sign for Montpellier HSC, where she made 71 appearances and scored 11 goals over four years. A two-year contract at 1. FC Köln came next, before she moved to the NWSL in July 2023 to join Houston Dash.
Her first NWSL goal did not come quietly: in April 2024 she settled a match against Racing Louisville FC with a stoppage-time penalty.
