It exists as the reserve arm of VfB Friedrichshafen, a boarding-school arrangement for young talent rather than an ordinary club structure. That status carries a Sonderspielrecht, a special playing right that keeps the team permanently out of the promotion and relegation battle: it cannot go up to the top flight, and it cannot go down either.
The lone honour on record, the 2. Bundesliga South title from 2002/03, reads now as an early marker rather than a defining moment.
