That climb followed a fall. Gotha had reached the top-flight 1. Bundesliga in 2010 and stayed there two seasons before the company running the club went insolvent, dropping the team as far as the Regionalliga. Rebuilding from that took patience: promotion in 2014, the Regionalliga East title in 2018, and a second 2. In between, two runs to the DVV Cup quarter-finals showed the side could trouble bigger names, beating Rottenburg and later the Netzhoppers before losing out to Friedrichshafen and to Berlin's Recycling Volleys.
Robert Werner's move from captain to head coach in 2024 kept the dressing room's recent history in charge of its next chapter. The derby against VC Dresden still carries the old East German regional rivalry.
