Zagreb built its reputation in team handball around one club. Founded in 1922, RK Zagreb carries the city's name into a sport where Croatian clubs measure themselves against continental rather than domestic opposition.
The numbers from that domestic run are almost absurd.
Europe told a different story for a while. RK Zagreb won the old European Champions Cup in 1992 and 1993. The Lions, as they're known in blue and white, never matched that continental peak again, though a runner-up finish in the EHF Cup Winners' Cup in 2005 showed the ambition hadn't gone anywhere.
Ivano Balić came through this environment before becoming one of the sport's defining playmakers, and Domagoj Duvnjak's name is tied to the club the same way. Neither needs the club to explain who they are; if anything, RK Zagreb's own standing in Croatian handball owes something to having produced them.
The derby against RK Split carried the old weight of Croatian handball rivalry, though it's RK Nexe who now give Zagreb its sharpest domestic test. The club left the 3,500-seat Dom Sportova behind for Arena Zagreb, where 15,200 seats now separate the Lions from whichever visiting side is trying to end a run that has already lasted 33 titles.
