Alexsander's path to Atlético Mineiro ran through Rio de Janeiro's Cavalcanti neighbourhood, where he grew up in the Primavera community before joining Fluminense's youth ranks — first in futsal, then, after a spell at Madureira, back into the Tricolor's football set-up. He made his professional debut for Fluminense in November 2022, lifting the Campeonato Carioca and the Copa Libertadores in 2023 and the Recopa Sudamericana the following year.

In August 2024 Al-Ahli paid €9 million for 85% of his rights, taking him to Saudi Arabia. He added another continental medal there, winning the AFC Champions League with the club in the 2024–25 season. On 30 July 2025, Atlético Mineiro brought him back to Brazilian football for a fixed fee of €6.5 million, with add-ons capable of pushing the total close to R$ 51 million.

At international level, the left-footed midfielder has represented Brazil at youth level rather than with the senior side, collecting caps for the under-20s as they won the 2023 South American Championship, and for the under-23s, for whom he scored in the 2024 Pre-Olympic Tournament. In December 2023, the CIES Football Observatory placed him sixth on its list of the top 20 under-21 prospects in world football.
