About the player
Anthony Smits joined AFC as a boy before moving to the AZ Alkmaar academy in 2018, at the age of 14. He worked his way through the club's youth ranks, playing for AZ Alkmaar U19 before stepping up to Jong AZ, the reserve side that competes in the Eerste Divisie.
Smits signed his first professional contract with AZ Alkmaar in June 2022, initially running until the summer of 2024 with an option for a further year. The club later extended the deal to mid-2026.
Smits left AZ as a free agent on 1 July 2026 to join the Austrian club Grazer AK. He signed a contract running until 30 June 2028, a move that, like his progress through the AZ academy, involved no transfer fee.
