Carlos María de Pena Bonino

De Pena grew up at Nacional in Montevideo and made his mark there early, scoring 15 goals in 58 appearances and helping the club to the Uruguayan Championship in 2014–15 and the Apertura the year before, a run that earned him a place in that season's Uruguayan Championship Ideal Team. That form took him to Middlesbrough in September 2015 for a fee reported at around £2.6 million, but England did not work out: he managed only six Championship appearances before a loan to Real Oviedo in Spain's Segunda División, and Middlesbrough released him by mutual consent in July 2017.

He returned to Nacional in 2018 and won the Uruguayan Interim Tournament before signing for Dynamo Kyiv as a free agent in April 2019.

A move to Brazil followed in 2022, initially on loan to Internacional and later extended through 2024, where he made 61 appearances and scored seven goals. He joined Bahia on a free transfer in April 2024, then signed for Coritiba in 2025, a season that ended with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B title. Despite that body of work, and reported interest in him for the 2022 World Cup squad, De Pena has never won a senior cap for Uruguay, his international experience limited to the youth ranks.
