Sport Recife

Sport won its group, then beat Guarani in the final under coach Émerson Leão. Sport alone was champion. Leonardo had been the forward who mattered that year, later going on to coach the national side.

Sport Club do Recife formed on 13 May 1905, after its founder, Guilherme de Aquino Fonseca, an engineer freshly back from Cambridge, first tried to set up a football section at Náutico and was turned down. He started his own club instead, and the rejection has run through the city's football ever since: Sport and Náutico still call their meetings the Clássico dos Clássicos, first played on 25 July 1909. More than 570 matches later, Sport leads it 220 wins to 189.

The nickname came from a trophy, not a badge designer. Touring Belém in 1919, Sport beat a combined Remo–Paysandu side to lift the Troféu Leão do Norte — the Lion of the North Trophy — and a local supporter snapped the tail off the lion figure on it. The club kept it broken, adopted the lion as its symbol, and has been Leão da Ilha, the Lion of the Island, since.

It opened on 4 July 1937 with a 6-5 win over Santa Cruz — Sport's other Recife rivalry, the Clássico das Multidões, dates to 1916. Sport also holds Brazil's 2008 Copa do Brasil, beating Corinthians in the final with goals from Carlinhos Bala, the first time a Northeastern club won the competition.
