About the player
In June 2019 Celtic agreed a fee of about £3.25 million for the Motherwell midfielder, but the move collapsed when he needed knee surgery during his medical. He stayed at Motherwell, and it was more than a year before he finally joined Celtic, in August 2020.
The setback came after the strongest season of his early career. Turnbull joined Motherwell's academy in 2009 and made his professional debut in 2018. In 2018/19 he scored 13 league goals and won the SFWA Young Player of the Year award, only the second Motherwell player to do so.
At Celtic he found a way back into the reckoning quickly. His first full season, 2020/21, brought 10 goals and eight assists. It earned him the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award, along with Celtic's own Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year honours. He stayed at the club until 2024.
Turnbull made his senior debut on 2 June 2021 in a friendly against the Netherlands, and he was named in the squad for UEFA Euro 2020, though he did not play in the tournament. He has won five caps and has not yet scored for his country.
On 1 February 2024 he moved south to Cardiff City for a fee of about £2 million.
