About the player
Edson Álvarez captained Mexico to the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup and scored the winning goal in the final against the United States. He was named the tournament's best player and took the Golden Ball. He had already been in the Gold Cup Best XI in 2021, so the 2025 award added to an established record in the competition.
He began in the youth ranks at Pachuca and moved to Club América's academy in 2014. He made his professional debut for América in October 2016. In July 2019 Ajax signed him for €15 million. He won the Eredivisie in 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22, and the KNVB Cup in 2020–21.
West Ham United signed him on 10 August 2023 for a reported £35 million. In August 2025 he went to Fenerbahçe on loan for the 2025–26 season, with an option to buy.
He made his senior debut for Mexico against Uruguay on 23 March 2018. He has since won 102 caps and scored seven goals. He played at the 2022 World Cup. Before that, he had been part of the Mexico under-23 side that took bronze at the 2020 Olympic Games.
He ended it as the man who scored the decisive goal.
