Finley Potter captained Sheffield United's Under-21 side in 2023, a marker of how far he had come back from a severe knee injury in August 2020 that kept him out for eighteen months, reportedly the result of a deliberate tackle from a Leeds United opponent. He won the club's Under-18s national title in 2021–22 and added international recognition with three caps for England Under-18s in 2022, part of the squad that won the Four Nations tournament in Zagreb.

Potter developed through two loan spells at Barnet. The first, in February 2023, brought 13 appearances and two goals; a second, season-long loan in 2023–24 yielded 16 more appearances and helped the club reach the National League playoff quarter-finals. Sheffield United recalled him in February 2024, and the club let him leave immediately on a permanent free transfer to Fleetwood Town, where he signed an initial 18-month deal.

He has passed 60 appearances for Fleetwood. Fleetwood were relegated from League One at the end of the 2024–25 season, and Potter has continued in League Two.
