About the player
Cork City gave him his senior debut in September 2019, and after nine appearances Crystal Palace took him to England, initially on loan before making the move permanent. Palace then sent him out again — first to Swindon Town, then to RWD Molenbeek in Belgium, where he made 30 league appearances, scored three goals and helped the club win the Challenger Pro League, earning a place in the Team of the Season.
That form persuaded Olympique Lyonnais to sign him for a modest fee. He started regularly in Ligue 1, making 27 league appearances and scoring four goals. The Merseyside club paid a base fee of around £16.4 million plus a sell-on clause.
O'Brien has also earned a Man of the Match award for Everton against Bournemouth. At international level, he came through the Republic of Ireland U21 setup, collecting 11 caps between 2021 and 2023, before making his senior debut for Ireland in June 2024.
