About the player
Joe Gauci cost Aston Villa a reported £1.3m–£1.5m in February 2024, a record fee for an Australian goalkeeper. He arrived from Adelaide United, the club where he made his professional debut in March 2021 and where he was named in the PFA Team of the Season for 2022–23.
His route there began in New Zealand, at Waiheke United, before he returned to Australia to play for Cumberland United and the FFSA National Training Centre. At West Torrens Birkalla he captained the under-18s to a National Premier Leagues title. His senior career started with Central Coast Mariners, and at Melbourne City he was an unused substitute in the 2020 A-League Grand Final.
Gauci debuted for Australia in March 2023 against Ecuador and has won eight caps.
Since the move to England he has been sent out on loan to gain senior football. He spent the first half of 2025 at Barnsley, then joined Port Vale, where he was named Player of the Month for October 2025. In July 2026 he went to Lincoln City. By September he had made three appearances there, among them his EFL Cup debut against Blackpool.
