About the player
José Manuel Fontán Mondragón came through Celta de Vigo's academy after starting out at San Miguel de Deiro and Arosa SC, joining the Galician club in 2011. He spent two seasons with Celta's B side before being promoted to the first team in July 2021, but his path to regular football ran through two loan spells rather than through Balaídos itself. At Go Ahead Eagles in the 2022–23 season he made 21 Eredivisie appearances and scored once, and the following year he moved to FC Cartagena in Segunda División, where he played 37 league matches and scored four goals.
That loan spell at Cartagena preceded his permanent departure from Celta. In July 2024, Fontán joined FC Arouca on a free transfer, signing a contract until 2027. He has since established himself in Portugal, making 59 Primeira Liga appearances for the club and scoring three goals.
Fontán also represented Spain at Under-21 level, earning four caps between 2021 and 2022. Further back, he was part of the Celta youth sides that won the División de Honor Juvenil in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons.
