Liam Smith

He started at Hillfield Swifts Boys Club and joined the Rangers academy at ten, but was released at 14. Heart of Midlothian took him on, and he signed his first professional contract in July 2014. His senior debut came the next month in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Hearts then sent him out on loan to East Fife, Raith Rovers and St Mirren. At St Mirren he won the title and was named in the PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year.

He left Hearts for Ayr United on a free transfer in August 2018 and was named in the same Team of the Year again for 2018–19. Dundee United signed him on a free transfer the following summer. Over four years there he made 106 league appearances and scored four goals, and the club won the Championship in his first season.

A move south followed when he joined Cheltenham Town in July 2023. In February 2024 he went on loan to Grimsby Town. He made 11 League Two appearances and scored once, a winner against Swindon Town that helped Grimsby stay up. He left Cheltenham that June and spent a spell with Bohemians after signing in July 2024.

St Johnstone signed him on a one-year free transfer in August 2025. By May 2026 he had made 25 league appearances and scored three goals, and the club went up to the Premiership as champions.

Smith also played for Scotland at youth level: two caps at under-16, one at under-19 and ten at under-21 between 2016 and 2019.
