Toby Steward

Toby Steward’s path to professional football began within the Portsmouth academy system, where he joined at under-10 level. The academy graduate’s progression was not linear. After signing his first professional contract in February 2022, the tall keeper was sent out on loan repeatedly to gain experience. He found his footing at Gosport Borough, where he made 41 appearances over a full season.

The break came in April 2025 while on loan at Crawley Town. It was there he made his English Football League debut, keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Birmingham City. Shortly after, he moved north to join St Johnstone on a season-long loan.

The results followed quickly. During the 2025–26 Scottish Championship season, Steward kept 20 clean sheets in 45 appearances. His consistency helped St Johnstone win the league title and secure promotion to the Scottish Premiership. Standing 1.93 m tall, he used his reach effectively.

Earlier in his career, he represented England at youth level, attending a four-day training camp at St George's Park in September 2021. Despite this recognition, no competitive international caps have been recorded for the goalkeeper. He remains a Portsmouth player, having never left the club permanently, with his career defined by short-term moves designed to accelerate his development.

His current role at St Johnstone marks a significant step up. The Scottish Championship provided a sterner test. The extension of his loan until July 2026 suggests the club values his contribution.
