About the player
Michael Opoku joined Sarpsborg 08 in August 2025 from Lyngby for a reported fee of around €1 million, with sell-on clauses for the Danish club. He signed a contract running to June 2028.
Opoku grew up in Brøndby Strand and started out in the youth system at Brøndby IF. In the summer of 2020 he moved to Lyngby Boldklub and came through the academy there. In January 2024 he signed his first professional contract, valid until 2028. He made his Danish Superliga debut the following month.
His breakthrough came in 2024–25, when he made 26 league appearances for Lyngby and scored four goals. That season was the basis for the move to Norway.
At Sarpsborg he has played 14 league games and scored once.
Opoku has been part of Denmark's youth national sides. In 2024 he won five caps for the Under-19s and was in the squad for that year's UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He has since played for the Under-20s, with six caps to date, taking in the 2025 Maurice Revello Tournament and friendlies. He has not been capped by the senior national team.
