About the player
Nicolas Schmid's career has been built largely in one city. He came through the youth ranks of DSG Union Pichling and FC Juniors OÖ, then spent four years in LASK's academy before returning to Juniors OÖ for his first senior football. He made 51 league appearances there.
LASK held his registration from 2016 to 2019 without giving him a senior league match. The 2018–19 season, spent on loan at Blau-Weiß Linz, brought a single appearance. He joined them permanently in 2019.
Blau-Weiß is where his career took shape. He played 131 league games for the club, loan spell included, and won the Austrian 2. Liga twice, in 2020–21 and 2022–23. The second title brought promotion to the Bundesliga in 2023.
On 21 August 2024 he moved to England, joining Portsmouth. The fee was officially undisclosed, though a figure of €400,000 was reported. His initial contract was reported as two years and has since been extended to 2029. By May 2026 he had made about 72 competitive appearances for the club.
Schmid has represented Austria at youth level. In 2024 he was called up to the senior squad, but he has not yet won a senior cap.
