About the player
Rui Mendes left Portugal at the age of seven. Born in Gondar, Amarante, he holds both Portuguese and German citizenship and passed through a string of German clubs — TSG Dissen, Viktoria Georgsmarienhütte, Bad Rothenfelde — before reaching Arminia Bielefeld's youth sides. There, with a professional contract on the table, he turned it down and moved instead to Hoffenheim's second team, where he spent three seasons and scored ten goals in 59 appearances.
The move that changed his career came in July 2021, when he joined FC Emmen on a free transfer.
That form earned him a transfer to FC Groningen in January 2024, for a fee of around €250,000. He went on to make 34 appearances for Groningen, scoring three goals, and again played his part in a promotion campaign, as the club secured a return to the Eredivisie in 2023/24. His contract at Groningen ran until June 2026, at which point he signed for SC Telstar on a free transfer, putting his name to a two-year deal.
He has not been capped by Portugal at senior or youth level.
