Louis van Gaal spent the 1977-78 season at Telstar.

The club itself was assembled rather than born. In 1963, two rivals from Velsen, VSV and Stormvogels, folded their professional sections into a single side because neither could carry the cost alone. The new name came from the communications satellite Telstar 1, launched into orbit that same year. Between 2001 and 2008 the team played as Stormvogels Telstar under a tie-up with an amateur club before reverting to the original name.

Telstar have never won the Dutch title or the KNVB Cup outright; the closest they have come is the semi-final, first in 1991-92 and again in 2025-26. What they have done twice is win promotion to the Eredivisie, in 1964 and in 2025, six decades apart. They play in all white at the BUKO Stadion, a ground that holds 5,338 and has carried several names down the years, which is also where the nickname comes from: De Witte Leeuwen, the White Lions.
