Under different sponsors it has carried different names — Wagner & Partners Stadion, Trendwork Arena, Offermans Joosten Stadion among them.

Financial trouble forced Fortuna '54 of Geleen and RKSV Sittardia of Sittard into a merger on 1 July 1968, and the resulting Fortuna-Sittardia Combinatie only took its present name in 1979. Fortuna '54 had already won the KNVB Cup twice, in 1957 and 1964, and topped the Eerste Divisie three times in the years around it.

Money trouble followed the new club as well. Relegation from the Eredivisie in 2002 left it with a debt of 24 million euros, and in 2009 the KNVB stripped its professional licence outright; Fortuna won it back through a civil court ruling.

Two cup finals, 1984 and 1999, both lost — to PSV and to Ajax.
