About the player
Mattijs Branderhorst's path to the Eredivisie ran through the Willem II academy, where he arrived in 2009 after starting out at TSV Theole. He made his senior debut for Willem II in 2015 and, after a loan spell at MVV Maastricht, finally making his Eredivisie debut on 15 October 2017.
The move that shaped his career came in January 2019, when he joined NEC Nijmegen on loan before signing permanently later that year. He started in the play-off final against NAC Breda, which NEC won 2–1 to secure promotion to the Eredivisie for the 2020–21 season. Branderhorst went on to make 95 league appearances for NEC and was named the club's Player of the Year for 2021–22, a season in which he kept ten clean sheets, including three in his first four matches.
At NEC he sat behind Jasper Cillessen, and after a free transfer to FC Utrecht in June 2023, limited playing time behind Vasilis Barkas pushed him to look for a way out. That came in July 2024, when he joined Fortuna Sittard on loan, making 28 appearances before signing permanently in 2025.
His time at Fortuna Sittard has not been without setbacks: an injury sidelined him for 13 matches between February and April in the 2025–26 season. He has not been capped at senior international level for the Netherlands.
