About the player
Shogo Taniguchi chose the University of Tsukuba, where he captained the side and won gold at the 2011 Universiade and bronze in 2013. Kawasaki Frontale had already shown interest after his school days, but he turned that offer down to finish his studies first.
Four J1 League titles came in that spell, along with an Emperor's Cup, a League Cup and two Super Cups, and Taniguchi was named to the J.League Best XI four times. In December 2022 he left for Al-Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League on a free transfer, a spell that ended by mutual consent in the summer of 2024.
His international career has run in parallel with his club form. The high point on the international stage came at the 2022 EAFF E-1 Football Championship, which Japan won with Taniguchi named the tournament's best defender.
