About the player
Stephan Negru, who also appears as Stephen, was born in Dublin and plays for Moldova. He made his senior international debut on 30 March 2026 in a friendly against Cyprus.
His route into the professional game began at Lourdes Celtic. In 2017 he joined the Shelbourne academy and worked up through the under-17 and under-19 sides. He made his first-team debut in August 2022 and played six league games that season, scoring once. Shelbourne also reached the FAI Cup final that year, where they finished as runners-up.
In January 2023 he moved to Oxford United on a free transfer. Opportunities in the league there were limited: he made 15 league appearances for the club, and much of his time was spent out on loan. His first loan was at Salford City from July 2024. He was recalled in January 2025, then returned to Salford and stayed until August 2025. Bristol Rovers took him next, from September 2025 to February 2026.
The final loan was at Tranmere Rovers, from February to May 2026. Tranmere secured League Two survival in that period, and Negru was part of the squad that did it.
His Oxford contract expired in June 2026. He then signed a two-year permanent deal with Swindon Town.
