In 2007 a club that had been champion of Austria eight times lost its licence over a bankruptcy. The following years brought it back to the top flight, though it left again in 2022, relegated from the Bundesliga on results and returned to the second tier.

SK Admira Wien , founded on 17 October 1905, and SC Wacker Wien , founded in 1907, merged in 1971 into FC Admira/Wacker. In 2008 a sponsorship deal briefly put the name Trenkwalder on the first team.

Most of the silverware belongs to the clubs before the merger. Admira Wien won the Austrian championship eight times between 1927 and 1966, and the cup five times; Wacker Wien added a championship and a cup of its own in 1947. As a combined club, Admira Wacker has since added an Austrian Supercup in 1989 and the Intertoto Cup in 2001.

The club now plays at the motion_invest ARENA, formerly the BSFZ-Arena, which holds 10,600.
