Águila

Águila go into this season still carrying the weight of last year's title, the 2023 Apertura.

The football section only came into being in 1956, when a group of enthusiasts bought a second-division spot from Alacranes — before that, Águila, founded on 15 February 1926, had built its name in baseball and basketball. The new team played its first season as "CD A" to avoid confusion with a Santa Tecla side of a similar name, and only took the name Club Deportivo Águila the following year. What happened next has no real parallel in Salvadoran football: two years after the section existed at all, and having just reached the top flight, Águila were champions of El Salvador in 1959.

That start set the pattern. The club has won the Primera División 17 times, stretching from the 1960s through Apertura and Clausura splits into the 2020s, and added a CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1976 — a rare continental credential for a Salvadoran side. San Miguel has never had reason to look elsewhere for its team; Águila have played there from the beginning, at the Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza, a ground that holds 11,000.

Among the silverware sits a curiosity dating to 1968: the Copa Charlaix, awarded not for a single season but for stringing together five straight championships.
