Setúbal, on the Sado estuary south of Lisbon, has watched Vitória in blue and white for more than a century. The club traces back to 20 November 1910, when it was registered as Sport Victoria, and it ranks among the oldest football sides in Portugal. Home matches are played at the Estádio do Bonfim, opened in 1962 and holding 15,497.

The Portuguese Cup has been the club's stage more than once. In 1965 Vitória beat Benfica 3-1 in the final, and forty years later, in 2005, they did it again, 2-1. In 2007/08 they added the League Cup, seeing off Sporting on penalties. In the league itself the closest Vitória came to the title was second place in 1971/72, with a third-place finish following two seasons after.

What came later was a fall few clubs recover from. Licensing failures kept Vitória out of the top flight in 2019/20, and by 2022/23 the club had dropped as far as the fourth tier. Two seasons after that it was playing in the sixth division of the Setúbal district league. The climb back began in 2025/26, when Vitória returned to the Campeonato de Portugal, a long way removed from the nights it beat Benfica at the Bonfim.
