Four times Espanyol have come out of the Copa del Rey with the trophy.

Before either, there was the drop. Relegation to the Segunda in 1962 cut the club loose from the division it had joined in 1928 as a founder member, and the road back has been walked more than once since — a Segunda title in 1994, another promotion after the 2020 relegation, sealed in 2021.

The club began as a student project. Ángel Rodríguez, then studying at the University of Barcelona, set it up on 28 October 1900 as Sociedad Española de Footbal, a name that changed almost as often as the politics around it. The blue and white came in 1909, taken from the colours of the Catalan admiral Roger de Llúria. Three years later Alfonso XIII granted the royal title, and the crown went into the badge. It came out again in 1931, when the Second Republic was proclaimed and the club spent a spell as Club Esportiu Espanyol, before the old name returned after the Civil War.

Home has moved twice in the modern era. The Lluís Companys stadium on Montjuïc served from 1997, and in 2009 the club took possession of the Cornellà-El Prat ground it owns outright.

Chen Yansheng bought a controlling stake in 2016, and the badge was redrawn in 2022. What has not moved is the fixture that defines the calendar: the Barcelona derby, against a neighbour that has never lost the argument in the league table — Espanyol have never won a Spanish championship.
