Bolivia

Since 2024, Bolivia have often left La Paz for El Alto, where the Estadio Municipal de Villa Ingenio holds between 22,500 and 25,000. The Estadio Hernando Siles, the team's traditional home, holds around 41,143. The new ground was where they beat Chile 2–1 in World Cup qualifying in September 2024. Chile are the rivals that matter most to them, and the tension goes back to the War of the Pacific, fought from 1879 to 1884. The fixture has no nickname of its own.

The team is known as La Verde for its green shirt, and as Los Altiplanicos for the high plateau where it plays. The federation dates from 1925, and the national side made its debut a year later, joining FIFA in the same year.

The peak came at home in 1963. Bolivia won the South American Championship, now the Copa América, with five wins and a draw and went through the tournament unbeaten. In 1997 they hosted the competition again and reached the final, but lost 3–1 to Brazil. That runner-up place earned them a spot at the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Most of the players behind the 1990s team came through the Tahuichi Academy. Marco Etcheverry, known as "El Diablo", was the star of the 1994 and 1997 sides. At the 1994 World Cup, only Bolivia's third appearance at the finals after 1930 and 1950, Erwin Sánchez scored the country's first goal in the tournament. It came in a 3–1 defeat by Spain. In 2009 the team beat Argentina 6–1.

The national record belongs to Marcelo Moreno: 31 goals in 108 caps.
