Independence Stadium sits in Bakau, and Gambia's national team, The Scorpions, have played out the bulk of their history there. The Gambia Football Federation was founded in 1952, and the side it runs took the field for the first time on 9 February 1953, beating Sierra Leone 2–1 in a friendly right there in Bakau.

Recognition came in stages: CAF admitted the federation in 1966, FIFA followed in 1968, but a first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations proper took decades longer to arrive. When it did, in 2021 in Cameroon, Gambia reached the quarter-finals on debut, finishing second in their group before the hosts ended the run 2–0. Three years later, back at the tournament in Ivory Coast, the draw was unkind — Senegal, Guinea and Cameroon in one group — and Gambia went home without a point, beaten 3–0 by Senegal along the way. That fixture carries weight beyond the scoreline: Senegal sits next to Gambia geographically and historically, and the meetings between the two have never needed a nickname to matter.

Omar Colley wears the captain's armband and has done so through more than 60 caps, the most anyone has managed for the country. The senior side's breakthrough has been matched, at times outdone, by the age-group teams: the under-17s won the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in both 2005 and 2009, and the under-20s took the WAFU Zone A title in 2018 and 2020 before reaching the final of the African Youth Championship in 2023.

A World Cup place has not yet followed. What has stayed constant since 1953 is Bakau itself, the town where the Scorpions played their first match and where Independence Stadium still stands.
