Nigeria is the fixture that matters most, the "Jollof Derby", though Ivory Coast has left its own mark, above all in the 1992 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Before there was a Ghana Football Association there was a Gold Coast side, and it played its first match against Nigeria on 28 May 1950. The GFA itself followed in 1957, taking over from the old Gold Coast federation and joining FIFA a year later, by which point the team had already taken the nickname that stuck: the Black Stars, in white at home and gold away, with red and green from the flag worked into the kit.

The 1960s and early 1980s were the run that built the reputation: four Africa Cup of Nations titles between 1963 and 1982. Abedi Pele carried the side through the years either side of that, voted African Footballer of the Year three times running from 1991 to 1993, and it was his generation that took an Olympic bronze in Barcelona in 1992 with the under-23s.

Ghana has been to five World Cups since 2006 and qualified again for 2026, but that 2010 quarter-final remains the ceiling. A team that plays its home games shuttled between Accra and Kumasi, with Kumasi's Baba Yara Stadium ruled unfit for international football by the Confederation of African Football over its pitch, has not lifted the continental title since 1982.
