Catanzaro

Angelo Mammì's goal in a promotion play-off against Bari and Atalanta put Catanzaro into Serie A in 1971. It arrived five years after the club had already gone as far as a Coppa Italia final, lost 1-2 to Fiorentina in 1965-66.

The name on the shirt dates to 1929, when a visit by Mussolini prompted a renaming of the side formed two years earlier from the merger of Scalfaro and Braccini. What survived the politics were the colours: yellow and red, hence giallorossi, still worn at the Stadio Nicola Ceravolo, which holds 14,650.

Serie A lasted five seasons, 1978 to 1983, and its best finishes, seventh in 1981-82 and eighth the year before. Claudio Ranieri spent eight of his early years there and still holds the club's Serie A appearance record; the city made him an honorary citizen in 2019. Massimo Palanca is remembered for a hat-trick against Cosenza and a penalty that decided a game with Triestina.

Twelve seasons stuck in Serie C2 through the 1990s, then bankruptcy in 2006 and again in 2011, each time refounded under a new company. The historic name, Unione Sportiva Catanzaro 1929, only returned in 2018.
