CD Olimpia

Tegucigalpa sits crowded into a bowl of hills, its streets pitched steep enough that a flat pitch feels like a small miracle, and for over a century the capital has measured its own sporting weight against one club above the rest.

Club Deportivo Olimpia began in 1912 as a baseball side named for the Olympic Games, and only later, in the 1920s, did football become its business. The club marked its centenary in 2012, keeping 1912 as the year it counts from regardless of when the round ball took over.

Nothing in Honduran football rivals what Olimpia has built domestically. Thirty league titles have come since the professional era started in 1965, and the run of dominance produced a stretch few clubs anywhere can claim: in 2005–06, Olimpia won three consecutive championships. The side went through the 1969–70 season and, decades later, the 2023 Apertura, without losing a single match.

Continentally, the club's signature night came in 1988, in the semi-final of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, when Olimpia beat Mexican giants Cruz Azul 2–1 at the Azteca Stadium itself, a result that still gets repeated in Tegucigalpa as proof the club could go into the lion's den and win there. That tournament was lifted twice, in 1972 and 1988, and the newer CONCACAF League followed the same pattern of doubling up, won in 2017 and again in 2022, the second time against Alajuelense on penalties after a 5–4 aggregate.

Home games are played at the Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés, which holds 35,000, under the white shirts that give the club its nickname, Los Merengues, though supporters just as often call the team Los Leones, after the lion that has stood as its symbol since the founding.

Ask anyone in the capital which Olimpia team they'd point to first, and the 1988 Azteca night still gets mentioned before any trophy count does — a single result carrying more weight than the ledger it sits inside.
