In 2024, six players released by Alianza Lima turned up at training in Cutervo, a mountain town in Cajamarca. For a club that had spent most of its life in district leagues and the Copa Perú, fielding that many names from the country's biggest side was the sort of thing that made the rest of the league take notice.
The club began in 2001 as Los Comerciantes, registered by Abdías Cieza Tapia, Juan Tarrillo Castro and Jorge Salas Toro in Cutervo's district second division. It reached the national stage of the Copa Perú for the first time in 2008, then went one step further in 2010, losing the final to Unión Comercio.
The club won Liga 2 in 2015 and stepped into the Primera the following year, a debut season that ended with sixth place and a spot in the Copa Sudamericana. Roberto Ardiles was the face of that campaign, a midfielder who made the season's ideal XI. Up front, Matías Sen , an Argentine forward who became club captain, has scored more than 70 goals for Comerciantes Unidos.
Home games are played at the Estadio Juan Maldonado Gamarra, rebuilt between 2013 and 2016 and awarded FIFA certification going into the 2025–2026 season. Under the blue and yellow of Las Águilas Cutervinas, it now holds 13,000.
