Peru's promotion ladder begins in the district leagues, and that is where the run started: champions of the Liga Distrital de El Tambo two years running, in 2007 and 2008, then through the Copa Perú. The 2008 title did it. A club founded the previous February, by Édgar Araníbar and registered then as Huancaína Sport Club, was in the top division.

Home is the Estadio Huancayo, which carried the name IV Centenario through its first life, from 1962 until it closed in 2005. It reopened for the club and has held 20,000 since 2012.

The red that gives Rojo Matador its name is the first colour on the shirt, with orange alongside it; in Huancayo the side is also called the León de la Incontrastable.

What the record shows most often is the last step missed. Sport Huancayo reached the final of the Copa Bicentenario in 2019 and lost it. In 2020 they finished runners-up in the Torneo Apertura, and did the same again in 2022 — near enough to the domestic title twice in three seasons without taking one.

The reserve and youth set-up has been more decisive. It took the Torneo de Promoción y Reservas in 2017, and last year the club's Liga 3 side finished top of the competition. That is the current business: a first team still chasing the trophy it has twice come close to, and a younger group that has already won its own.
