Since 2019 the club has carried the name Cusco FC, dropped precisely because the city already had a Club Deportivo Garcilaso, founded in 1957, and the two kept getting confused. That's the Clásico Cusqueño: two clubs sharing a home city and, until the rebrand, nearly sharing a name.

The club itself traces to 16 July 2009, when it was set up under the name Real Garcilaso; the supporting association had been formed a year earlier. Two years later it won the Copa Perú, the route by which regional clubs force their way into the professional pyramid, and that 2011 title bought entry to the top flight. It didn't stay there without interruption.

The shirt is a pale gold rarely seen elsewhere in Peruvian football, worn by a side its own supporters call Los cusqueños.
