Estoril

Yellow and blue, for the sun and the Atlantic: Estoril takes its colours from the coastal strip west of Lisbon that also gave the side its older name, Equipa da Linha, the team of the line. The club was formed in the Cascais district on 17 May 1939, and the ground it still uses opened that same year.

Five seasons later it reached the top division for the first time and the Taça de Portugal final in the same run. Benfica won that final 8–0.

Relegation followed in 1952–53, and the climb back took the better part of thirty years. The Englishman Jimmy Hagan took charge in 1973 and came back for a second spell in 1981–82, the season Estoril finished eighth in the first division. The low point arrived in 1998–99, when the club dropped into the third tier for the first time; successive titles in 2002–03 and 2003–04 undid it.

The most productive stretch belongs to Marco Silva, who won the second division in 2011–12 and stayed three years. In 2013–14 Estoril finished fourth, and went into the Europa League group stage in each of the two seasons that followed. American investor David Blitzer bought the club for €6 million in May 2019; a second-division title in 2020–21 returned it to the top flight.

The Estádio António Coimbra da Mota holds 8,000 on paper. Since 2018 the Nascente stand has been shut after defects were found in its foundations, which caps the licensed crowd at 5,094.

In 2023–24 the club reached the Taça da Liga final and lost it.
