Major League Soccer needed clubs before it needed history. In 1995, ten investor-operators signed on to build the league from nothing, and Dallas was one of them, formed on 6 June that year. The first match followed on 14 April 1996, at the Cotton Bowl, played under the name Dallas Burn.

The Burn tag lasted until August 2004, when owner Lamar Hunt renamed the club FC Dallas ahead of a move into a stadium built specifically for it in Frisco — Toyota Stadium, known at first as Pizza Hut Park, holding 19,096 for football. The 2005 season opened under the new name and the new nickname, Los Toros.

The Open Cup has been kinder to the club than the league's own trophy: Dallas won it in 1997 and again in 2016, the same year it topped the table for the Supporters' Shield. A run to the MLS Cup final in 2010 ended in defeat to Colorado Rapids. Two further Open Cup finals were lost, in 2005 and 2007.

Not every year has gone that way. 2003 brought the club's first missed playoffs in 7 years, the sacking of coach Mike Jeffries, and home fixtures shifted for a stretch onto a high-school ground, Dragon Stadium. A similar spell of upheaval returned between 2021 and 2024, when Luchi Gonzalez and then Nico Estevez were both dismissed as head coach.

Against Houston Dynamo, the fixture is the Texas Derby, contested for a trophy cast as a replica of an 18th-century howitzer and nicknamed El Capitan.

What the academy has sent to Europe reads like a scouting report — Weston McKennie to Juventus, Chris Richards through Bayern Munich, Ricardo Pepi across the Bundesliga. Jesus Ferreira stayed, came through the same academy, and was named MLS's best player in 2023.
