Finland come into major tournaments now with an expectation they didn't carry for most of their history: a first European Championship in 2020, played in 2021 after the pandemic delay, but not before Finland beat Denmark 1–0 in the opening match, a game overshadowed by Christian Eriksen's collapse on the pitch. It was the country's first win at a major tournament finals, ever.
That drought explains more about Finnish football than any single result. The national side has never reached a World Cup, and its best Olympic finish, fourth place, dates back to the 1912 Stockholm Games. The team itself formed in 1907, the same year the Football Association of Finland was established, and took the field for the first time in 1911 against Sweden.
The nickname Huuhkajat, the Eagle-owls, is newer than most people assume. It stuck in 2007, after a real eagle-owl landed on the pitch mid-match against Belgium. Jari Litmanen, still the most-capped player in the side's history with 137 appearances between 1989 and 2010, belonged to the generations who never got a tournament to show for their careers. Teemu Pukki, who finished with 43 goals, was the one on the pitch when that finally changed in 2021.
Finland's silverware sits mostly in regional competition: two Nordic Football Championship titles, in 1964 and 1966.
