That match, a 6–3 win in 1953 known since as the Match of the Century, and the 7–1 return the following year in Budapest, marked the peak of the side built around him, Ferenc Puskás and Sándor Kocsis — the Aranycsapat, still referred to simply as the Golden Team. Between May 1950 and July 1954 that team went 31 matches unbeaten, a run ended only in the World Cup final itself, a 3–2 defeat to West Germany that stung all the more for Hungary having beaten the same opponents 8–3 in the group stage. No Hungarian side has reached one since.

The team traces back to 1902, when it lost its first official match 5–0 to Austria in Vienna — a fixture the two countries have now played more often than any other pair of nations in the sport. Olympic football brought better returns: gold in 1952, 1964 and 1968. The 1956 uprising broke up the Golden Team for good. Puskás did not return to Hungary; the federation withdrew from World Cup qualifying, and the side that had terrified Europe for half a decade never reassembled.

Goalkeeper Gyula Grosics played behind that defence through all of it, from the Olympic final in Helsinki to the World Cup final in Bern, the man who was there for the winning and the losing both.
