David Beckham had not yet kicked a ball for LA Galaxy in 2007 when he wrote into his contract an option to buy a Major League Soccer franchise for $25 million. The clause sat unused until 2014, when it became Miami Beckham United, a group with Simon Fuller and Marcelo Claure. Jorge and Jose Mas, the brothers behind MasTec, joined later and pushed the stadium plan through; by 2021 they had bought out Claure and SoftBank's Masayoshi Son to take majority control, with Beckham remaining alongside them. The club was unveiled on 5 September 2018 as Inter Miami CF, in pink and black, though its first MLS match waited until March 2020.

The trophies came late, then quickly. The Leagues Cup in 2023, settled on penalties against Nashville, was the club's first silverware, arriving in Lionel Messi's debut season. A year after that first trophy, Inter Miami topped the regular-season table for the Supporters' Shield with 74 points, and in 2025 they beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 to win the MLS Cup.
